Portrait Fx for Photo Items

As part of our Father’s Day Special, we thought of offering customers some unique Photo Items from our current list of Photo Treasures.  A photo coffee mug, and a photo t-shirt sounded like some good gift ideas for Dads.

We wanted to come up with some special photo effects that would give an artistic touch to the Photo Items, especially the t-shirts.  Here are couple of Special Fx that we thought would work.

Let us know which of the 2 you prefer, and any suggestions on other looks or effects that you might be interested in.

1.  Canvas Contrast Effect

Canvas Contrast Effect

This effect is more or less a contrasty image of a studio portrait created as a result of extracting only the “Black” channel of the color palette.  The “blown out” look is rather intentional for blending in with the white t-shirt, even though the portrait started out with excellent exposure and color balance.  Some adjustment to the Levels was necessary to avoid some of the shadow details (e.g. hair) from also getting blown out.

A Canvas texture filter was then used to create a very subtle texture for picking off from the t-shirt clothing texture.  Finally, text can be added to personalize the portrait before it gets sent to the print lab for a quality Photo t-shirt that a Dad can proudly wear.

2. Comic Book Effect

Comic Book Effect

We thought this effect might be more appealing to children, while being reminiscent of the old comic book feel for the hidden child in the adults.  We spotted this effect on one of the tutorial links featured through NAPP, and thought that with some tweaks, it might appeal to some customers as a choice for their Photo Item.

The effect is created through a series of steps including surface blur, luminosity effects on an inverted RGB channel, “cut-out” filter effect, followed by “poster edges” filter effect and certain blending modes.  Finally, the comic book look is captured by applying the “pixlate-color halftone” effect and then inverting it to blend into the light areas, and show through the shadows.
